In order to communicate with air traffic control, it is mandatory to acquire the authorisation in radio telephony (voice), as an integral part of pilot training (subject 90). This authorisation is granted after successfully passing an examination, which alongside a theoretical part, includes a practical part (simulated flight).
Candidates without a pilot license, who would however like to take on an aeronautical function to support the pilot, can obtain a separate permit in radio telephony. In order to get this certification, a theoretical exam with questions regarding specific subjects in private pilot training, in addition to the practical examination in radio telephony, must be passed.
